Safety Critical Medical

Safety critical assessments are required for employees or prospective employees who will be undertaking jobs that have a high degree of risk associated with them. The assessment ensures that individuals are medically fit to carry out their work safely and without risk to themselves or others.

Safety Critical Medicals are essential for organisations to comply with the requirements set forth by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. This legislation places a legal duty on employers to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of their employees and the public. It specifically emphasises the importance of competence in safety-critical roles.

How We Support You

Our safety critical assessments are designed to ensure that your employees are fit for their safety-critical roles, tailored to your specific preferences and requirements. We provide a comprehensive range of health checks to evaluate both physical and mental fitness, ensuring that any potential health risks are identified early.

To minimise disruption to your business, we offer the flexibility to conduct these assessments on-site or at a location of your choice. Our services are customised to fit seamlessly into your operations, ensuring that the process is as efficient as possible.

We offer personalised quotes based on your specific needs and the scope of the assessments required. Additionally, our Safety Critical Medicals cover the necessary evaluations for Confined Space and Working at Height roles, and we can include these on relevant certifications upon request.

FAQ

A safety critical medical typically includes the following assessments:

  • Baseline health questionnaire to review current and previous medical and psychological health history, including HAVs Tier 1&2.
  • General health assessment (BMI, blood pressure, and pulse).
  • Audiometry (hearing) test and ear examination.
  • Visual acuity assessment, including near and distance vision, colour vision, and peripheral vision.
  • Lung function testing to identify any underlying respiratory conditions.
  • Musculoskeletal and mobility check to assess range of movement and physical limitations.
  • Dermatology (skin) assessment to check for conditions that could affect the ability to work safely.

The medical typically takes up to 60 minutes to complete. This includes all the necessary assessments and checks to ensure that your employees are fit for their safety-critical roles.

A drug and alcohol test is not automatically included in the standard safety critical medical, but it can be added upon request. If your job requirements include drug and alcohol testing, please let us know, and we will ensure it is part of the assessment.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, individuals must be provided with a safety critical medical examination if they work in roles that are deemed safety-critical by their employer. This is to ensure that they are fit to work in hazardous environments or perform tasks that require a high level of physical and mental ability.

The certificate of fitness is valid for a set number of years depending on age group:

Under 54: Three years

55-65: Two years

65 plus: Annually

However, to maintain the certificate, a general health assessment is required annually.

If an individual fails the safety critical medical examination, they may be deemed unfit to work in a safety-critical role. However, this will depend on the specific requirements of the job and the company’s policies. In some cases, the individual may be offered a different role that is more suitable for their health status.

The cost of a safety critical medical can vary depending on the specific requirements of the role and any additional assessments needed. For a tailored quote, please fill out our convenient form and our team will provide you with an accurate estimate.

A drug test is not a mandatory part of the safety critical medical examination but can be included if required by the employer or the specific job role. If you need a drug test to be part of the assessment, please let us know when arranging the medical.

If you require a safety critical assessment for your employee(s), please contact us to book an appointment. We will provide you with a questionnaire to complete before your appointment and will require a form of ID, such as a driver’s licence or passport, before the assessment.
